What is Baby Yoda?

If you have watched the Star Wars universe, you might have definitely been inspired by the powerful and wise Jedi Grand Master,  Yoda. He was first introduced in the 1980 film,  The Empire Strikes Back.  Baby Yoda belongs to the same species as Jedi Grand Master, Yoda.  Since the Yoda species never got a name or a proper history, not much is known about them. They’re mostly known to be force-sensitive, minute green aliens. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars has always surrounded mystery around Yoda to intrigue the fans.

Find here various interesting theories about how was Baby Yoda created.

Where does He Belong?

That’s still a mystery. Let’s look at Yoda’s case. Even though Luke Skywalker has met Yoda on a misty and swampy planet of Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back, it’s not considered to be Yoda’s home. Yoda is in exile there.

Just like Luke Skywalker,  The Mandalorian found Baby Yoda on a desert planet called Arvala-7. Surprisingly, it resembled Luke’s childhood home, Tatooine a lot. An uncanny resemblance somewhere, isn’t it? Since, The Child is the only Yoda found around, this points that he somehow landed there mysteriously and that place is not the home-world of the species.

Let us read a few more theories about the identity of Baby Yoda:

The Bounty Hunter forms the center of the storyline of The Mandalorian. In the first chapter, he is assigned the task of apprehending a 50 years old target, with minimal information. The Hunter is shocked to find a cute little thing curiously staring at him.

It is the internet that can be credited with naming the cute creature, Baby Yoda, since it bears a strong resemblance to the Jedi master.
  1. Are you Sure that Baby Yoda is Actually a Yoda?
If you notice, ‘The Mandalorian’ took place after The fall of the Empire. However, it took place before the rise of Kylo Ren and the First Order in ‘The Force Awakens’. So, there is no timeline that Baby Yoda is the actual 900 years old Yoda who dies in the ‘Return of the Jedi’.

Contrary to the fan’s popular opinion, Baby Yoda is can not necessarily be an infant. As in Chapter 2 of the series, Baby Yoda is seen frequently climbing out of its crib. This hints at him being a Toddler. And Toddlers give a tough time to their parents.

2. Whose Child is Baby Yoda?

The major curiosity out there is whether Baby Yoda is Yoda’s son. There is nothing that points to this. In fact, nothing major is known as Yoda’s child at this moment. They are known to be talented force users and very rare as a species. So, nothing can be said about Yoda’s parents. Can’t you see their rarity from the fact that Baby Yoda is the third of its kind to be charming the audience?

3. How Strong is Yoda with The Force?

Since Baby Yoda is a toddler, he has not mastered his skills yet. He, however, is Force-sensitive. In Chapter 2, when Mandalorian fights with a single-horned monster, a tensed Baby Yoda raises his hand to stop the beast, right on its tracks. After that, The Child passes out from weakness. This nostalgically reminds of Yoda’s famous quote from ‘Return of the Jedi’, ‘Strong in the force am I, but not that strong’.

Very cute, according to the audience. How can you not gush over those innocent looking saucer-sized eyes, the X-wing ears, and those endearing mitts? How would the sight of the cutie not melt your heart?

The effect is entirely different when you see The Child in The Mandalorian. In fact, science has accepted that you’re programmed in such a way that you can’t help falling in love with the adorable looking green little Yoda.

Social media seems to have gone gaga over Baby Yoda, so much as someone has confessed to being ready to even take a bullet for him.

People also claim that they seem to develop nurturing and loving feelings after looking at the sight of the green puppet with big eyes. Bryce Dallas Howard the director of the fourth episode of The Mandalorianadmitted to having an intense reaction on the first glance of the robed puppet. She describes being overpowered by the feeling of wanting to smush it because of its cuteness.

A theory has proposed that he can be a clone. Another theory postulates that he can actually be a clone of Master Jedi. Another alternative theory has proposed that he was a clone of Yaddle. It has been introduced in The Phantom Menace as a member of the Jedi Council.

Cloning does exist in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. There’s the clone army led by a Jedi master way before the Clone Wars. In fact,  Emperor Palpatine, the Dark Lord of the Sith from the Star Wars franchise cloned himself several times over.

However, it’s quite difficult to clone Force-sensitive beings. So, it’s not a very convincing argument that The Child would be cloned.

6. The Simplest Explanation

The Child simply belongs to Yoda’s species.  George Lucas has been quite secretive about Yoda’s species and there have been a few similar beings over the course of the Star Wars franchise. Nevertheless, the easiest explanation for Baby Yoda is that he belongs to the Jedi Master’s species and has abilities in the Force.

7. What does Baby Yoda Signify for the Mandalorian?

Even though, Baby Yoda’s origins are mysterious, he has proven to be an important entity for Mando who decided to break the Bounty Hunters’ Guilds’ code to save the child from the hands of the Client. So, in episode 3, he ends up taking the reward along with the bounty to various parts. This ends up giving a whole new and fresh perspective to Mando by not only making him the most wanted man in the galaxy but also a sort of a savior and anti-hero who does not fear to choose the right over wrong when it comes to making huge decisions.

The Final Word

The Child has received critical acclaim for its role and cuteness.  The Mandalorian team has intended to keep the Baby Yoda a bit weird by diverting from the usual baby sounds and adding creature noises with the help of sound design.  In the end, no matter what the history, Baby Yoda does hold huge importance for the Star Wars franchise. Also, his adorable disposition and characterization will always keep him well-loved by the fans.
