You will be surprised to know that Islam highly discourages obesity or weight gain. There are several verses in the Quran and hadiths that represent the same.
It is said so because abnormal weight gain can make a person lazy and laziness may eventually interfere with your daily prayers.
The following narration is observed in authentic hadith from-Tirmidhi; clearly shows that one should not have an excess of food or eat until their stomachs are full.
“No man fills a container worse than his stomach. A few morsels that keep his back upright are sufficient for him. If he has to, then he should keep one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for his breathing.” [Tirmidhi]
As per the narrations and the sunnah, it is advised to divide your stomach into 3 parts. One part should be filled with food, the second part must be filled with water and the third part must be left empty.

Here is how you can lose weight by following Islam in the simplest ways:
1) Make intentions:
As a Muslim, I’m sure all of us are aware of the importance of making intentions. Our deeds and their rewards are solely based on our intentions.
It is important to make good intentions before you decide to lose weight. Remember you are losing weight to lead a healthy lifestyle and not to fit in modern society.
2) The sunnah:
There are numerous sunnah of eating and drinking. Some of these are backed by science and have a huge impact on your body. Some of the sunnah you must consider following are:
- Sit and drink water
- Drink water in 3 sips.
- Say ‘Bismillah’ before you drink water or eat food.
- Drink water in between morsels of food
- Do not drink water after your meal
- Avoid excessive eating; eat until 1/3rd of your stomach is full.
- Sit with your back straight while eating
- Eat whatever is available around
- Eat with three fingers
- Lick your fingers after you eat to avoid wastage.
- Do not excessively fill your plate; allow others to fill and eat first.
These sunnah are life-changing. They have several hidden benefits that are within the knowledge of Almighty Allah, who is the lord of the unseen.
3) Eat healthily and exercise:
Islam encourages healthy eating. There are several fruits and vegetables that are mentioned in the Quran for their amazing benefits. Some of them are pomegranates, milk, honey, water, olive oil, figs, cucumbers, gourd, onions, dates, grapes, meat, and lentils.
Islam also encourages exercise if that benefits your body. Your body is a gift from Allah Swt, it is your responsibility to take care of your body. Some of the exercises you can do are cardio, horse riding, and swimming.
4) Consistency:
It is important to be consistent in your weight loss journey. You must know that the entire process of losing weight might take a lot more time than expected. Be patient and stay consistent.
Avoid junk and opt for a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, losing your weight slowly is proved to be better than losing several pounds in a week. You are more likely to gain weight if you lose a lot of weight in a short period.
