Canker Sore Home Remedies

Canker sore can be very hard to miss even though they are often very, very tiny. When you eat and drink the canker sore can become irritated and cause pain too which is never fun for anyone. Since there isn’t much prescription medications for canker sores, canker sore home remedies are very popular and most of them actually work.

People often get canker sores confused with cold sores which are two different things because cold sores are a form of herpes. You typically will just find canker sores alone and not in packs like cold sores can travel.

Canker Sore Symptoms:

Symptoms of a canker sore include soreness, tenderness and pain while eating, irritation and redness around the sore.

The top canker sore home remedies that actually work:

When it comes to canker sores people often try to get rid of them quickly, so the majority of these home remedies are intended for quick relief and removal.

  • Put baking soda on the canker sore for two minutes 2-3 times a day
  • Swiss some lidocane around in your mouth for two minutes once a day
  • Alum, spice, can be applied directly onto the canker sore and has proven to show results
  • Put some salt on the tip of your finger and apply it directly to the canker sore. It may burn the first time but do it 2-3 time and then wash your mouth out with warm water. If your canker sore is further back in your mouth you can simply gargle some warm salt water.
  • Wet tea bags applied to the canker sore can also help relieve the canker sores but is not one of the most popular canker sore home remedies because tea bags are larger than some areas of our mouths.
  • Frequently rinse your mouth out with aloe juice
  • Grapefruit seed extract mixed with water can also be applied to your canker sores directly
  • Chewing on fresh papaya leaves or eating a whole fresh papaya
  • Directly apply tea tree oil
  • Goldenseal powder can also apply directly to the affected area or you can also mix some water
  • As strange as it may sound, raw onions can also be applied to the canker sore directly

Prevention and Recommendations:

Getting rid of your canker sores is just half the battle because you need to also prevent them from coming back. Eating foods high in vitamin B (like vegetables) is a great way to prevent canker sores from returning. Also keeping good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly can help keep those painful canker sores away too. Spicy and acidic foods are often the tastiest but they do not do well with prevention of canker sores so if you are prone to them, you may want to monitor the amount of spicy and acidic foods you are eating.

Hopefully some of these canker sore home remedies can help you in getting rid of them as well as helping you prevent them from ever returning.
