Boosting Your Immune System- Popular Myths busted

Boosting Your Immune System is the power of resistance of an individual towards any disease or foreign body entering your body. Immune cells such as macrophages, WBC, T-cells, B-Cells, etc fight the disease-causing agents or any foreign bodies. Indeed, the development of these cells is affected by our sleep, diet and persistent health conditions.

Here we bust some popular myths regarding boosting your immune system:

Myth:

The more you exercise, the higher the immunity.

Fact:

A moderate amount of exercise is said to be beneficial as it helps you stay ‘fit’. To some extent, it can also lower your cortisol level and give that extra push to your immune system. But exercise does not guarantee a strong immune system. Moreover in a study, it was seen that people who over-exercise such as athletes have a weaker immune system. People who exercise a lot were more at risk to get infections than the ones who exercise moderately. Exercise is good to increase your metabolism and to reduce the risk of many heart-related problems and control hormonal disorders.

Myth:

Sleep does not affect your immune system.

Fact:

A proper sleep should be one of our priorities. Sleep does not have a sudden and a rapid effect on your immune system but lack of sleep for a continuous period of time can lower your immunity. It is important for us as adults to sleep for at least 7 hours per day to stay fit.

Myth:

Diet will not help in boosting your immunity as much as exercise will.

Fact:

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration if I say that diet is majorly responsible for boosting your immunity. There are several food items that enhance immunity and improve your immune system. Changes in your diet or lack of a proper lifestyle will definitely have a major influence on your immunity. Therefore, it is important to sleep well and eat healthily.

Myth:

Flu vaccines only make your immune system weaker. If you don’t take some of your regular vaccines, you can build natural immunity.

Fact:

None of the vaccines will make your immunity weak. Vaccines are meant to enhance your immunity and aid in building a strong immune system. Taking vaccine for flu or any other infection/disease will not have a negative effect on your immune system. Instead, if you want to build natural immunity, you should avoid relying on antibiotics and other medicines. Excessive use of antibiotics makes your body drug-resistant that in the long run will rust your immune system. Complete and frequent reliance on drugs or antibiotics to fight a particular disease may prove to have a negative impact on your natural immunity.

Myth: Supplements will boost your immunity faster.

Fact: Supplements do helping to keep your body healthy and boosting your immunity but that does not happen in a blink of an eye. Supplements should be taken on a daily basis to have a long term yet beneficial effect. Having an excessive amount of supplements in your diet especially when you are sick does not improve your immunity. Moreover,  there is nothing as effective as proper sleep, healthy diet and moderate exercise for boosting your immunity.
